What is Web Hosting ?

The World Wide Web is a massive collection of web sites, all hosted on computers (called web servers) all over the world. The web server (computer) where your web site's html files, graphics, etc. reside is known as the web host. Web hosting clients simply upload their web sites to a shared (or dedicated) web server, which the ISP maintains to ensure a constant, fast connection to the Internet.

Web hosting is a service that provides Internet users for storing information, images, video, or any content that can be accessed by others through the network. This service is usually offered by ISPs or web hosting specialists. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data centre space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center.

Websites are composed of a multitude of computer files that reside on a server. That server hosts the website.

Web hosting, also known as site hosting, is an essential service that must be sought out by any individual or company wishing to secure a presence on the Web. If you wish to make information available to the public over the Internet will need to have that content located and stored on an Internet-connected, storage heavy computer, running 24 hours a day 7 days a week. These computers are usually owned, maintained and serviced by a specialist company, known as a host. They serve up content to a particular location on the Internet and are referred to as commercial Web servers. A server hosts a large number of websites from various companies and individuals, larger web sites, usually corporations and companies opt for the more secure, flexible and more reliable dedicated computer which is reserved entirely for that customer's site contents. These web hosting providers can generally provide far quicker connections to the Internet than that of individuals, because they boast carrier-class direct links, which normally is ineffective, cost wise, to the average user.

What is Shared Hosting/Virtual Web Hosting ?

Shared hosting /Virtual web hosting is where the service provider serves pages for multiple web sites each having its own Internet domain name from a single web server which essentially means that your site will not be the only one using the resources on the server. Most web hosting companies provide shared hosting. Virtual web hosting is available on both Unix and Windows based servers. It is the most common type of hosting available and most companies will find shared hosting to fit their web hosting needs.
Although shared hosting is a less expensive way for businesses to create a Web presence, it is usually not sufficient for Web sites with high traffic as they would require a dedicated Web server so they can take advantage of all of the server resources including storage space, security, software and speed which could be provided by a Web hosting service or maintained in-house

What should I look for in a Web Hosting Service Provider (Web Hoster)?

While embarking upon a mission of evaluating and choosing a web hosting provider that will most suit the needs of your particular business on the Internet … you place different emphasis on each of data center issues, whether it is connectivity, customer service, reliable network, control panel, uptime, bandwidth, traffic limitations, number of email addresses, FTP support vs. templates, domain vs. subdomain, speed /independence of data management and pricing. But whichever of those seems the most crucial for you, it is important that the whole hosting environment has been expertly planned and seamlessly integrated with traffic analysis, and monitoring control over networking equipment resources for every individual customer.
